Summer Programs

Every summer, CDRI hosts annual summer programs in three cities—San Diego, San Pablo, and Pasadena. The programs are designed to help middle school students strengthen their powers of thought and expression and enrich their mathematical and scientific knowledge. Central to this effort is a model in which high school and college students serve as tutors and mentors to younger adolescents through a structured summer internship.

Summer programs span three to four weeks. The first one or two weeks focus on training the high school and college interns, who study educational materials, develop tutoring skills, gain a deeper appreciation for the needs of the age group they will be working with, and visit families of potential participants.

The remaining weeks are dedicated to tutorial programming. Alongside academic enrichment, the programs offer opportunities for young people to play sports, engage in arts and crafts, learn musical instruments, participate in basic automotive and construction projects, and undertake acts of service in the community.

In each locality, the summer program concludes with a celebration in which parents, family members, friends, and community members are invited to hear what the young people have been doing and rejoice in their accomplishments.
